Grants Advice and Support to Inward Investment

One of the services provided by BHP Corporate Finance is advice on obtaining grants. Over the years we have advised numerous businesses on raising grants as part of funding packages for development projects. Some of these are for our existing clients, but many are referred to us specifically for help in this area.

The schemes we have accessed include Regional Selective Assistance, Selective Finance for Investment, the Invest for Growth Schemes, and Grants for Research and Development although some of these schemes are no longer available.  This illustrates that the availability and identity of grants is constantly changing but we seek to keep abreast of all developments.

As a team, we have also developed close working relationships with the local development agencies, Creative Sheffield, Yorkshire Forward, and Renaissance South Yorkshire, with a view to offering our support and enthusiasm to the programme of attracting inward investors to the area.

Our role with grant applications varies depending upon the sophistication of each company's Finance Department, and also the time which they can commit to the application. In some instances, we substantially prepare the business plan and financial projections in conjunction with the client, whilst in other instances, they are prepared by the client so that our role is limited to reviewing and advising on them, before assisting with the completion of the application forms. In all the cases, we effectively act as project manager in respect of the grant application, submitting it to the relevant agency and dealing with all queries.

We take a flexible approach to fees in relation to this work. Appropriate arrangements are agreed in advance on a case-by-case basis, but this frequently includes an element on a contingency basis whereby we are remunerated as a percentage of the grant which is actually obtained.

When a grant has been successfully obtained, it is often necessary for the claims to be certified by a qualified accountant.  The required form of the certification varies depending on the grant giver but again we have wide experience of dealing with these.
